Improving Your Pool

Advantages Of Choosing A Diatomaceous Earth Pool Filter

If you have recently started looking at pools and the installation of an in-ground variety on your property, then you likely understand that the pool will need a filter. There are various types of filters that include different kinds of media or filter material. These include the diatomaceous earth filters. Keep reading to learn about them, the advantages of choosing this kind of filter and how you can keep it working properly.

Benefits Of A Diatomaceous Earth Pool Filter

A diatomaceous earth pool filter is a filtration system that used diatomaceous earth to remove dirt and debris from pool water. Diatomaceous earth looks as though it is a powder, but it is actually a very fine solid compound formed from the exoskeleton remains of small creatures called diatoms. Fossilized remains of the diatoms are utilized to make the filtration media, and the majority of the powder is comprised of silica, much like sand.

Unlike sand though, the exoskeleton compounds are angled and fit together like puzzle pieces. This allows for the ideal filtration of particles through the media. In other words, the spaces between the fossils are smaller, so the filtration is much better. Also, unlike other types of filters, like sand and cartridge varieties, the diatomaceous earth will start working right away to remove debris. Other filters need to be primed, and this can take some time.

The filter media will also last longer than other types, and since they do not allow a lot of debris through the filter, mildew is unlikely to develop on your pool. Mold and mildew get trapped int the filter instead.

Maintaining The Filter

If you have a filter with diatomaceous earth, then you will need to complete some maintenance tasks. The most important involves the cleaning of the filter and the replacement of the media. Unlike other filter types, the diatomaceous earth needs to be completely removed and replaced during backwashing. While this can increase costs to some degree, the silica filter media is relatively inexpensive.

Backwashing and media replacement must be completed whenever the pressure inside the filter raises above eight pounds. This may happen once a month, depending on how often you use your pool and run your filter.  When you replace the filter media, make sure that you rinse out the filter with your hose before replacing it, so it is as clean as possible.
